The
Indian, Chinese, continental and typical Kerala food items add variety to the
menu cards in the hotels across Kovalam. There is a wide variety of food to
cater to the non-vegetarians and vegetarians alike. Seafood is
the most sought after cuisine here. Grilled seafood prepared from lobster, king
prawns and kalamari are high in demand. Boiled tapioca and fish curry, a typical
Kerala cuisine and a favourite dish of many western tourists, is available in
almost all the restaurants. Porridge, muesli, eggs, toast, jam and pancakes are
the common items for breakfast. Seafood with varieties of salads and chips
constitute the menu for dinner. Fish is the most common and popular food item in
Kovalam. The enticing delicacies of fish available in the restaurants
include tandoors and sizzlers. Seer fish, barracuda, sea bass, catfish, king and
tiger prawns, lobsters and prawns are the types of fish found common.
For lunch you can also opt for the typical Kerala style food, known as 'sadya'.
Cooked rice along with about fifteen vegetable curries are served on fresh
banana leaves. 'Payasam', rice porridge cooked in milk and sugar, is offered as
the dessert after the 'sadya'.
As
for the drinks, coffee and tea are available in all the hotels and
restaurants. Freshly made lemon, orange and pineapple juices are available all
over the beach, but guard against the tendency to add tap water. Indian made
beer is available in almost all the restaurants and hotels, though the price and
quality may vary from place to place.
