Shopping:A long line of shops that sells
exotic curios such as oriental ornaments, handicrafts, Kashmiri, Tamil,
Bengali, north-eastern and Tibetan handicrafts outlines the Kovalam beach.
But the prices are a bit high, but bargaining may bring down the price.
For example, a Kashmiri shawl for which the shop keeper would demand
Rs. 3, 500 may be given for Rs. 2500. A wooden smoking pipe may be priced Rs. 350. But if the vendor is pretty sure that you would take the thing,
he may be ready to lower the price upto Rs. 100. A vast array of
handicrafts that bears the mark of the colourful and artistic temperament
of North India is reflected in the bangles, fancy and jewellery items.
Shops also sell bags of spices at very cheap price. Instant tailoring
services are available. You can order to stitch a gown or a coat
according to your needs within a period of a few hours. But the most
ebullient seller on the beach is the 'sunglass man'. He approaches the
prospective customers with a pleasant smile and a variety of sunglasses.
Pick up one and return the smile.
