DESCRIPTION

Evoking a feeling of nationalism and patriotism at one glance, Kargil war memorial is a must visit attraction in Kargil. The memorial is built to honor the soldiers who fought bravely in the Kargil war against Pakistan. At the memorial house, one can see picture description of the major event that took place during the war and army personals who lost their lives. Additionally, the memorial has Sandstone wall where the name of all the soldiers who are inscribed. Make a point to hire a guide as they can tell about the peaks captured by the Pakistani soldiers which are clearly visible from the memorial.

HOW TO REACH

The Kargil War Memorial is right by the side of the highway going from Srinagar to Leh. If you are traveling by road from Delhi, you can reach Leh via the Leh – Manali Highway or Srinagar Leh Highway. From the town of Leh, the memorial is at a distance of 270 km.

The best and only time to plan a visit to the Kargil War Memorial will be between July and September. It's during the summer season, the memorial is accessible else for the rest of the year it remains closed as the region experiences heavy snowfall.

ACTIVITIES

The terrain of Kargil and Drass is inhospitable in the best of times. Some of the characteristics of the region are jagged heights of up to 18,000 feet and harsh gusts of wind and temperatures plunging to about -60 degrees Celsius in the winter. The battle terrain of 'Operation Vijay' is dominated by high altitude peaks and ridgelines most of which are over 16000 ft. Unlike other similar high altitude areas, the Kargil Mountains lose snow cover rapidly as the summer progresses. Below the peaks and the ridgelines are loose rocks, which make climbing extremely difficult. If it is not the snow cover, then it is the rocks, which cause extreme hardships to the troops.

July 26, 1999 will go down in the annals of Indian history as a day when the determined Indian forces achieved a glorious victory fighting against all odds in the icy heights of Kargil.
