Kasauli : 77 k.m. from Shimla and 35 k.m. from Kalka, at 1927 metres is a quaint little town that seems to exists in a time wrap in an era that reminds one of the 19th century. Its colonial ambience is reinforced by cobbled paths, quaint shops, gabled houses with charming facades and scores of neat little gardens and orchards. Kasauli is surrounded by a mixed forest of chir-pine, Himalyan oak and huge horse-chestnuts. Its narrow roadslither up and down the hillsides and offer some magnificent vistas. This small hill station seems to live in time warp that belongs to the 19th century. The narrow roads of Kasauli (1951m) slither up and down the hillside and offer some magnificent vistas. Directly below is the spread of vast plains of Punjab and Haryana which as darkness falls, unroll a gorgeous carpet of twinkling lights. At 3647 m, the peak of Choor Chandni also called the Choordhar powerfully dominates the lower hills and across the undulating ranges, Shimla is visible.

On the Kalka - Shimla Highway, Barog (1680m) has grown from a mere stopover to a full-fledged destination. Surrounded by pine and oak forests, Barog has a commanding setting. Barog makes a conveniently accessible destination and a travel stopover to or from Shimla.

? Chail : 43 k.m. from Shimla and with a lush green setting, this was the former 'summer capital' of the Patiala state. At 2250 metres it has the world's highest cricket pitch and a polo ground, the old palace, now a hotel, and the possibility of some angling are added attractions.

When Bhupinder Singh, Maharaja of Patiala was expelled from Shimla - The Summer Capital of the British India, he decided to create his own capital for the warm months. The little village of Chail was perfect. Along the National Highway 22, as you cross the State border from Haryana into Himachal, Parwanoo (470 m) welcomes you. A couple of decades ago, this was a sleepy little village and today, it is a major industrial town. For the tourist, Parwanoo is a convenient base station to see and visit a number of nearby areas.

? Kiarighat : A little short of Shimla, Kiarighat was once a Dak bunglow. Now HPTDC runs a Tourist inn here.

Situated at Kalka-Shimla National Highway, Kiarighat is a small place where tourists can stay for a while or stay overnight.
