The Valley of Flowers is a declared National park (1982) and along with the Nanda Devi National Park is encompassed inside the Nanda Devi Biosphere reserve. The Valley is a UNESCO World Heritage site and the Biosphere is part of the UNESCO World Network of Biosphere Reserves.Ghangaria is situated at a strategic location from where the Valley of Flowers Trip begin, Ghangaria became the base after camping in the valley was banned. While one direction takes you to the valley, the other leads to the high altitude lake of Hemkund sahib, a revered shrine of the Sikh community. Himalayan Eco lodge, Ghangria is the best base for the Hemkund Sahib Trek as well.
