Tiruchirappalli, situated on the banks of the river Cauvery is the fourth largest city in Tamil Nadu. It was a citadel of the early Cholas which later fell to the Pallavas. Trichy is a fine blend of tradition and modernity built around the Rock Fort. Apart from the Fort, there are several Churches, Colleges and Missions dating back to the 1760s. The town and its fort, now in Trichy were built by the Nayaks of Madurai. This city has given great Tamil scholars whose contributions to the Tamil literature have been very significant.
Pick up at your Madurai hotel at 8am, travel by private car and driver to (Tiruchirappalli) to visit the Sri Ranganathaswamy Temple (or Thiruvarangam Tamil) where your guide explains why this Hindu temple, dedicated to Ranganatha (a reclining form of Vishnu) is so important and why the temple's location, on an island in the Cauvery River has left it vulnerable to natural disasters.
Next, around 1pm, stop for lunch (additional cost) and then continue to Thanjavur to visit the Royal Palace complex and Brahadeshwarar Temple. Also visit Peruvudaiyar Kovil, a Hindu temple dedicated to Shiva with is an outstanding example of Tamil architecture during the Chola dynasty. Also known as Periya Kovil, Brihadeshwara Temple, RajaRajeswara Temple and Rajarajeswaram, this temple is one of the largest in India.
Around 4pm, relax in your private car while your driver takes you back to your hotel in Madurai, arriving around 5pm.
