Royal Bengal Suites

The Glenburn Penthouse is a discreet, elegant residence in the heart of historic Kolkata, with spectacular views of all her iconic landmarks; From Victoria Memorial to Eden Gardens, the lush green expanse of the Maidan and the majestic bridges that cross the River Hoogly. Conceptualised and executed over a number of years, the team behind Glenburn Tea Estate's boutique hotel in Darjeeling, have carefully amassed an exquisite collection of antique Bengal colonial furniture and artworks to create a haven of quiet luxury above the bustling streets of the city of Kolkata.

The Drawing and Dining Rooms are adorned with our bespoke 'Hindoostan' wallpaper, designed in Paris, with scenes of rural India from days gone by. Leading off this gracious sitting room is a balcony and a Tea Verandah overlooking Victoria Memorial, perfect for outdoor dining, and where breakfast and afternoon tea is served during congenial weather. Always blessed with a pleasant breeze, these terraces are used most of the year, and the vintage fans and crisp white wicker furniture, tropical plants and cool marble floors add to the charm of the many private guest areas of The Penthouse.

Each of the 9 spacious suites have a large sleeping area with antique four poster beds, enough desk and sitting space for 2 people to live and work comfortably and efficiently, in a soft, elegant ambience, with lots of natural light. Easy-to-manoeuvre wooden shutters on all the windows allow for filtered shade during the hottest parts of the day, and reveal the spectacular views without the need for curtains or blinds. Shades of celadon green, yellow and white are complemented by mirrored furniture and textiles that include our Glenburn signature tea print on the bed linen and hand-embroidered luxury cotton sheets. Collections of art that reflect the historical theme of the hotel fill walls with interesting stories and map out journeys taken by early travellers. Fine carpets adorn the wooden floors to add a touch of warmth, while the cool marble floors of the elegant hallways, dressing rooms and bathrooms provide a welcome respite from the heat. The large 'white-marble' bathrooms are equipped with bathtubs and walk-in showers, with lots of natural light and Glenburn Therapy Darjeeling Green Tea bath accessories.

There are 2 categories of suites:

4 Royal Bengal Suites: These suites have either a spectacular, direct view of Victoria Memorial from the room, or a private living room, verandah and terrace making them the most spacious of our 9 suites.

5 Calcutta Suites: These suites are very spacious, with separate dressing rooms, and one has a private balcony, but the views are not as spectacular as the ones you get from the Royal Bengal Suites.

A rooftop terrace leads you to our infinity pool that looks on to Victoria Memorial and all the panoramic sights of the city. A sun deck with whimsical cane furniture and sun loungers will encourage you to relax after a dip in the pool, on the most exclusive vantage point of the city. An elegant library with french doors looking out to a covered verandah and courtyard beyond, gives guests another beautiful indoor sitting area, but also a lovely space for small events and cocktail evenings.

Key to the experience is our historical and cultural walks and tours that take you to unique places in the city based on any special interest you may have, or just a curiosity, interacting with local people, dining in their homes, and connecting with the fabric that makes up this vibrant but often misunderstood city. Pushing people just beyond their comfort zone, yet keeping them safe, and in touch with the local vibe. Our concierge service will have access to the best tables in local restaurants, private boat charters, private tailoring and secret as well as mainstream shopping recommendations. The Penthouse is a short walk from Victoria Memorial, the vibrant Maidan, and Park Street - a local hub for restaurants and bars.

Our menus are curated to combine a blend of Colonial, Bengali, Anglo-Indian and Kolkata street food inspired dishes with a contemporary twist using fresh local ingredients. Breakfast and Afternoon Tea are included in the nightly tariff, and we have a 'Menu of the Day' for lunch and dinner offering choices spanning these gastronomical themes.
